Tips for moving : packing and preparing for your house or flat removal.

Booking your house move

For many your house or home move can be a very stressful time!! The whole process can be stress free but moving house requires planning and organization on your part.

The key to a stress free home removal is to plan way ahead to give yourself plenty of time to deal with any unexpected situations. If you have chosen to self pack make a start as soon as possible. The most difficult removals we have done are usually as a result of customers trying to pack up as we are moving items into the removal van.

We would advise you obtain quotations at least 4 weeks before your removal. If you are obtaining several quotations for your house move, be sure that each firm is quoting for the same type of service for a fair comparison. You can get a free over the phone quotation from http://www.nicemanbigvan.co.uk for any removal to or from the Brighton and Hove, Sussex area. We also move homes or offices to or from Europe. You are welcome to read our reviews.

Important, ensure the company quoting for your removal have the relevant goods in transit insurance, and check that the limit for the insurance is sufficient to cover your household goods. A detailed inventory of items with approximate value will need to be written up to give to your removal company prior to your move.

When booking your house move with the removal company make sure you have all address details of both properties with post codes for satallite navigation systems!

Also give your mobile telephone number to the removal company as the land line quite often gets cut off way before it is supposed to be!

Confirming the date (if possible) 2/3 weeks prior to your moving. Most house sale moves are part of a completion chain. The longer the chain, the more difficult it becomes to get everyone to agree to a date. A tentative completion date is agreed by the Solicitors and all parties work towards that date. When each party has everything in place, they are ready to exchange contracts. Exchange of contracts normally confirms a removal date. We would advise that removal date should be agreed and signed, at least 7 days prior. You can then confirm that date with your chosen removal company.

If you leave your decision to choose your removal company too late. You may find they will be fully booked on the day you require, and be unable to move you. Keep your chosen removal company up to date, and inform them of any changes.

Preparing to move

Order strong, decent removal boxes, bubble wrap, wardrobe boxes, packing paper and sofa / mattress covers if necessary from Nice man BIG van boxes and packaging supplies for FREE next day delivery (if your house or flat move is from in the Brighton & Hove area!).

Dispose of all unwanted items from your house, garage and loft, (you can tape spades, forks etc together in tidy bundles) if you live within Brighton and Hove area please try CCS Rubbish Removal Services.

Empty and package the loft items into boxes which should 'ideally' be taken from the loft and placed in another room in the house/flat for easy loading into van.

Book spaces as close as possible to your door at both ends of the move if necessary through your local council.

Contact Brighton and Hove City Council  here.

Try to eat up all the perishable foods slowly before your house moving date and keep your fridge /freezer contents to a minimum. Defrosting them the day before your house removal date.

Write to all your credit card companies, banks, doctors, dentists etc to advise of the new address your house move is to. You can do much of this FREE online with http://www.iammoving.com/ .

Pack valuable items and important documents that you will require on the house moving day to keep with you.

Arrange friends or relatives to look after pets and very young children on the day of your house move.

Packing your items

Please use strong cardboard boxes filled sensibly (not over heavy) and taped up at the top and bottom, you can label these with the room they need to be put into when moving it to your new house or storage facility.

Remember books and records in small or medium boxes and lighter stuff in the bigger boxes.

Dis-assemble any items of furniture that will need flat packing before the removal day. We can do this ourselves but cannot be held responsible for these items.

Wrap glass and chinaware in paper or bubble wrap before packing into the boxes and label these boxes fragile, maybe distribute sofa cushion and bedding in these boxes too for extra padding.

Clothes can either be transported in a wardrobe box or a decent strong, box , bag or suitcase.

Please try and wrap all pictures and mirrors either in paper or bubble wrap.

If it is wet weather on your house removal day please ensure cardboard or mats safely cover the carpet at both properties.

Pack the kettle last.

Cleaning your house

It is always a very nice idea to clean your old house for the new tenant as there is nothing worse than dealing with someone elses dirt!

When all this is done, then you are ready for the removal company to arrive and move you to your new home.
